Samsung reportedly using Qi2 in Galaxy S25 series

It’s been almost two years since Qi2 was announced, but only a single Android phone has used it thus far. Apparently, though, the Galaxy S25 series may end up supporting Qi2.

The Qi wireless charging standard is widely used today, but the updated Qi2 standard has seen barely any adoption outside of the iPhone. The updated standard, so far only used in the HMD Skyline, adds a magnetic ring to the device which can be used to align wireless chargers as well as opening up a new collection of accessories. Apple implemented this idea in the iPhone series, and the company worked with the Wireless Power Consortium which effectively led to opening the door to more smartphones using the tech.

But we’re all still waiting on one of the big names in Android to actually adopt Qi2.

Google’s Pixel 9 series was one of the first real opportunities for the tech to debut, but it didn’t happen. The OnePlus 13 also seemed like an obvious candidate, but that was recently confirmed not to be happening either.

Next in line is the Galaxy S25 series, and there’s now a glimmer of hope that Samsung will be using Qi2 in its 2025 smartphones.

Ice Universe, a fairly reliable Samsung leaker, responded to a rumor regarding Qi2 support on the Galaxy S25 series on Weibo saying that the rumor was “true” (via @Jukanloseve). There’s not much context to be added here, besides charging speeds still being at 15W, but it’s rather exciting nonetheless. As mentioned, the only Android phone today that supports Qi2 is the HMD Skyline, but the most popular flagship Android phone adopting Qi2 could mark a turning point for the standard, and push other brands to adopt Qi2 as well.

This should, of course, be taken with a grain of salt, but it provides a bit of hope that this could actually happen.

Samsung is expected to launch the Galaxy S25 series in January.
