After initially launching a dedicated installer in beta, Nvidia has confirmed that the GeForce Now service will fully support Valve’s Steam Deck handheld soon.
Nvidia offers a dedicated Steam Deck installer to get GeForce Now working on the Linux-based handheld, but this was not quite the full-fat gaming experience that you can have on other platforms. 4K resolution and HDR gameplay was not available through this browser-based workaround.
Under the hood, the installer adds Google Chrome to your machine and automatically configures it to work at its best for cloud gaming. Once installed, you’ll have a proper GeForce Now shortcut in your Gaming Mode library. GeForce Now’s web app is fully browsable using a controller, making it even easier to use with the Steam Deck or any other handheld for that matter.
At CES, the GPU maker confirmed that the GeForce Now app will soon be able to support HDR gaming on the Steam Deck in handheld mode and up to 4K 60fps playback when connected to a TV with a future update. If you prefer, you’ll also have 1440p 120fps HDR gameplay available when hooked up to an external monitor or TV. This is a big jump over the native 800p and low settings that most AAA tiles will run on the device – if compatible.
No word was given on when we can expect this GeForce Now update, but it makes the Steam Deck an even more viable home console replacement when docked with more framerate and visual options to tinker with.
