Samsung refuses to give the Galaxy Z Fold 7 a bigger battery, Flip 7 is 100 mAh less

New leaks show that Samsung is still refusing to put a bigger battery in its book-style Galaxy Z Fold 7, even though the Galaxy Z Flip 7 is rapidly catching up in capacity.

Samsung hasn’t updated the battery in its book-style foldable series for years now. The Galaxy Z Fold 2 introduced the largest capacity of the bunch, 4,500 mAh, before subsequent releases dropped down to 4,400 mAh and have stuck there ever since.

Regulatory listings at UL Demko as spotted by The Tech Outlook confirm that, for the Galaxy Z Fold 7, nothing is changing in the battery department. The device will still be saddled with the same 4,400 mAh battery as it’s predecessor, and the one before that, and the one before that… and the one before that too. Specifcally, the two batteries in the device would have capacities of 2,126 mAh and 2,146 mAh, totaling 4,272 mAh – just high enough to fall into a marketing or “typical” capacity of 4,400 mAh.

While the thinner profile of Fold 7 makes this unsurprising, it doesn’t sting any less, as Samsung’s foldable competition is running away with the win when it comes to battery capacity.

What makes it even worse is that the much smaller Galaxy Z Flip 7 is just 100 mAh below it.

We’ve heard rumors about the Flip 7’s battery coming in at 4,300 mAh, and this same regulator confirms that total. It’s a difference of just barely over 2%, despite the Fold 7 having a lot more screen real estate to power.

9to5Google’s Take

Oof.

That’s not to say this won’t get better in the future. Battery technology has been improving steadily in smartphones as of late, but Samsung’s… fiery history is probably motivating a conservative approach to those upgrades. As someone who owns a Galaxy Z Fold 6, the battery capacity has never been particularly bothersome on its own, but compared to other foldables such as the Oppo Find N5, endurance on Samsung’s side just doesn’t hold up. I’m excited for Fold 7’s improvements, but it’s disheartening to see the battery won’t be getting any better.
