Google announced with the Find Hub rebrand that the Moto Tag would start getting the UWB (ultra-wideband) nearby finding update in May. The actual rollout started a month later, with wide availability now here.
Motorola ties new tracker firmware with updates to the Android companion app. Today’s Google Play Store update takes you to version 01.00.073.14 of the companion app. After installing, you’re prompted about how it’s “Time to update your Moto Tag software.”

Mine work great and they have done for quite some time. On a recent return flight from holiday I tried to confirm my bags were on board mid flight but passenger phones were in airplane mode or turned off. Same for my son using an apple air tag. On landing when all the phones were turned back on my bag was detected as nearby and way before my son's using his iPhone and air tag. These are the real deal.
You go from Moto Tag firmware 2.0.69 to 2.0.104 with two items in the update changelog: “UWB update” and “Battery monitoring improvement.”

This is a newer app version (previously 01.00.073.10) and firmware (2.0.93) than what owners first saw in June.
This is a 0.49 MB update that takes less than a minute to download and transfer. Your Tag will proceed to install and reconnect after a few seconds. The process has to be repeated for all your trackers. (Amazon sells a 4-pack for $99 or a $30.39 1-pack.)
Afterwards, opening a Moto Tag in the Find Hub app (as shown in the cover image above) shows the distance from your compatible phone (like the Pixel 6-9 Pro) to the tracker. Make sure that Google app is also up-to-date.
