Apple TV app update brings Google Cast support on Android

An update to the Apple TV app on Android phones and tablets today finally introduces Google Cast support, thus closing a big functionality gap since the launch earlier this year.

After updating, the Google Cast icon appears to the left of your profile avatar in the top-right corner. This opens a “Cast To” bottom sheet that Apple has themed to fit the rest of the app’s design language.

The button is also available in the fullscreen player next to mute. When you’re Casting, you get a nice miniplayer that includes playback information, device, and timeline. That’s joined by 10-second rewind and play/pause at the right.

Tapping gives you a fullscreen portrait player with large buttons for rewind/forward and play/pause, as well as a scrubber, Audio, and Subtitles. The cover art is the show or movie’s poster with a swipe down to return home.

The lack of Google Cast support was quite notable at launch, with subsequent updates since February adding new episode notifications.

Apple today also tweaked the homescreen icon to be slightly smaller within the circle. Version 2.2 of Apple TV for Android  is rolling out now via the Play Store
