Gmail widget updated with Material 3 Expressive tweaks

Google has updated Gmail for Android’s homescreen widget with Material 3 Expressive tweaks.

The primary change is how the FAB (floating action button) for composing an email in the top-right corner is now a pill instead of the rounded square with Material You. This matches the other Google Workspace M3 Expressive widget refreshes.

This appreciably shrinks the header, which adds a Gmail icon before “Inbox” or any other folder name on all but the narrowest width. As a result, you get another line of text at the bottom.

Additionally, Google has reduced padding at the left and right, so you read more of the subject line or email.

This Material 3 Expressive widget was rolled out as of last month’s Gmail for Android release (version 2025.12.01).

Overall, it’s a straightforward Material 3 Expressive modernization, with Gmail joining Google Calendar (schedule + month view) and Drive (Suggested files). Google has yet to update Keep, while Tasks would benefit the most from a refresh.
