Gemini expands to Google Maps walking, cycling navigation

After debuting for driving directions in November, Gemini in Google Maps navigation is now officially available when walking and cycling.

When navigation is active, you can tap the Gemini icon — which is using the old color scheme — in the top-right corner or use the “Hey Google” hotword. To save you from typing while walking, Google touts hands-free prompts like:

  • “Tell me more about the neighborhood I’m in”
  • “What are some must-see attractions?”
  • “Are there cafes with a bathroom along my route?”

Similarly, you can be on a bike and still find out “When’s my next meeting,” while a command like “Text Sarah I’m 10 minutes behind” is available on Android.

Other prompts, which can include multiple steps, allow you to:

  • “Navigate home”
  • “Stop navigating”
  • “Add stop”
  • “Mute guidance”
  • “Show alternative routes”
  • “What’s my next turn?”
  • “When will I arrive?”
  • “What’s the weather like at my destination?”
  • “What’s my next stop?”
  • “Find me a cafe near my destination that serves [x]”
  • “What’s the most popular dish on the menu?”
  • “When does {Place Name} close?”
  • “Play some jazz”
  • “Stop playing music.”

Google says “Gemini in navigation for walking and cycling is live now worldwide on iOS wherever Gemini is available.” It’s “rolling out on Android.” However, Google Assistant remains available on some of the devices we checked today.
