Galaxy Z Fold 8 seems ready for a long overdue battery upgrade, but is it enough?

The Galaxy Z Fold 7 was a huge step forward for Samsung’s book-style foldable, but battery life has been anything but its strong suit. According to a new report, though, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is finally delivering a battery upgrade.

While the hardware of Samsung’s foldables has changed dramatically over the years, battery capacity has not. The biggest battery was 2020’s Galaxy Z Fold 2 with a 4,500 mAh battery, which then dropped to 4,400 mAh in the following year’s Fold 3. The battery has stuck at that size ever since, with Galaxy Z Fold 4, Fold 5, Fold 6, and Fold 7 all using 4,400 mAh batteries.

This is while competing foldable brands are surpassing 7,000 mAh in similarly thin devices.

Finally, though, it sounds like Samsung is looking at an upgrade.

GalaxyClub found data about the batteries found in Galaxy Z Fold 8, with an apparent bump to 5,000 mAh. The rated capacity of each battery cell will be 2,369 mAh and 2,485 mAh, which combine for a rated capacity of 4,845 mAh. That’s roughly the same as the Galaxy S26 Ultra’s 4,855 mAh rated capacity which is advertised at 5,000 mAh.

The question, then, is if that’s enough of an upgrade.

9to5Google’s Take

Battery life on foldables is something I’ve been thinking about a lot lately, as my Galaxy Z Fold 7 daily driver has not been aging particularly well in that department. My daily routine often sees the device under 85% by 10am, and it’s the device I’m charging most. Compared to other foldables I’ve spent time with over the past few months, such as the Honor Magic V6, it just doesn’t hold up anymore.

While I’m thrilled to see Samsung is finally addressing this pain point, I fear it might not be enough. After all, it’s only a 14%~ increase, and that’s assuming the leak turns out to be accurate.
