Latest Meta smart glasses update brings Gemini-like voice commands to Ray-Ban, Oakley

Meta is rolling out another software update for its Ray-Ban and Oakley smart glasses, this time with improvements for snow sports as well as translation, and a voice command experience that sounds a lot like Gemini Live.

Rolling out now, Meta’s v23 update for Ray-Ban and Oakley smart glasses brings a few key improvements.

One of the big changes here is improvements for snow sports with smart glasses, including integration with a Garmin wearable, automatic captures, and real-time information about resort conditions. Based on a support page on the topic, it sounds like this requires Garmin integration for most features, and Meta also warns that battery life is worse in the low temperatures.

Meta explains the new commands available:

  • Ski runs: “Hey Meta, how many runs have I skied today?”
  • Vertical descent: “Hey Meta, how much vertical have I skied today?”
  • Vertical ascent: “Hey Meta, how much have I climbed?” (great for backcountry skiing)
  • Speed and G-forces: “Hey Meta, what was my max speed on my last run?”
  • Slope grade: “Hey Meta, how steep was my last run?”
  • Personal records: “Hey Meta, what’s my longest ski run ever?”
  • Lift status: “Hey Meta, how many lifts are open at Mammoth?”
  • Trail conditions: “Hey Meta, is Brennan’s Trail groomed today?”
  • Weather: “Hey Meta, how much will it snow at Stevens Pass today?”
  • Resort hours: “Hey Meta, what time does the resort close today?”
  • Trail difficulty: “Hey Meta, give me some blue runs here.”

For recordings, Meta says that autocapture kicks in during “key moments like descents and ascents,” while footage can also get an overlay with “snow sports stats (speed, elevation, run count)” if you have a Garmin wearable.

Meta AI can now handle “more natural” conversations, including the ability to interrupt. It sounds a lot like Gemini Live. Live Translation on Meta glasses also now includes Hindi, Arabic, Russian, Swedish and Finnish in early access.

The full v23 update changelog follows:

Meta AI glasses now support snow sports

You can now track your snowboarding and skiing adventures with real time stats, directly on your AI glasses. When connected to a compatible Garmin device, you can track your snowboarding and skiing performance, capture your best moments automatically, and get real time information about resort conditions, all hands free. New live translation languages

If you have joined the Early Access program, you now enjoy live translation in even more languages: Hindi, Arabic, Russian, Swedish and Finnish, with more to come. These new languages don’t require you to download a language pack in advance, just select your preferred languages and start your session to hear translations in real time. More natural conversations with Meta AI

You can now chat more naturally with Meta AI. Just say “Hey Meta” to start a conversation. Feel free to ask questions, interrupt at any time, or follow up with related questions to keep the conversation going with no need to repeat “Hey Meta” each time. This feature is available on Ray-Ban Meta glasses and Oakley Meta HSTN in the US and Canada.
