Gemini for Home assistant adding Continued Conversation

Instead of having to use Gemini Live for extended speaker or smart display interactions, the Gemini for Home voice assistant is adding Continued Conversation.

Like with Google Assistant, Continued Conversation keeps the microphone active “for a few seconds” after the response to your first question. The lights on your device will continue to pulse or glow to show that Gemini is still listening.

This lets you ask a follow-up question without repeating the “Hey Google” hotword for a more natural back-and-forth conversation when you don’t want to use Gemini Live.

Compared to before, the Gemini for Home voice assistant “retains the conversational context of your previous exchange” to make “interactions significantly more intuitive.”

You: “Hey Google, what’s the weather like in Tokyo?”
Gemini: “It’s currently 65 degrees and sunny in Tokyo.”
You: “How about tomorrow?”
Gemini: (Gemini retains the context that you’re asking about Tokyo) “Tomorrow will be a bit cooler with a high of 60 degrees and a chance of rain.”

This feature is also useful for complex tasks like organizing to-do lists and meal planning.

Try asking for a recipe, and then immediately follow up with, “Give me a different version” or “Add those ingredients to my shopping list” as soon as the assistant finishes speaking.

Additionally, it’s no longer limited to US English, with this new Continued Conversation available for all Gemini languages and regions.

To reduce accidental activations, there’s smarter “Side-Talk” detection. Gemini can “better tell the difference between a follow-up question and a side conversation with someone else in the room.”

The final improvement is how the feature now works for everyone in your household, including guests.

Google is rolling out this feature starting today. To enable, go to Home Settings > Gemini for Home voice assistant > Continued Conversation.
