The latest set of updates for Pocket Casts on Android has added the ability to prevent auto-downloads to your device if you’re running low on storage.
As arguably the premier podcast app for Android, Pocket Casts has been leading the way in audio listening for just over 15 years now, and it’s impressive how it continues to lead the way for those wanting more control over the podcast experience. We’ve seen it develop into one of the most extensive apps of its type around.
The latest updates for Pocket Casts is adding more controls for how podcasts are downloaded with a smart control that’ll stop auto-downloads if you are hitting device storage limits. This will override the previous setting, which would still attempt to download podcasts you had the toggle enabled for, regardless of how much device space you had available.
Smarter downloads on Android
A new setting helps prevent auto downloads when your device is low on storage (we’re exploring bringing this to iOS as well!). Check it out at Profile -> Settings -> Auto download.
If, like me, you have a catalog of weekly listens that end up taking up gigabytes of space, this could be useful as it helps declutter. That said, you will still need to remove and manage your existing storage space as this will only prevent future downloads if an arbitrary limit has been reached.

To enable the auto download, go to Profile > Settings > Auto download and toggle “Only when enough storage.”
Sadly, it’s not clear what that limit is. Maybe in a future release we could set it manually as for most people this will never be an issue. This update is rolling out now via the Play Store and is already available to Pocket Casts Beta users as of April 27.
