Spotify is ditching username sign-in later this year

Spotify has communicated with its subscribers that, starting later this year, username sign-in will no longer be available with the platform switching to email-based sign-in.

As it stands today, Spotify allows users to log in with a username and password, an email address and password, or logins through other accounts such as Google and Apple.

In an email to subscribers today, Spotify says that username/password sign-in will be removed later this year. Instead, Spotify will rely solely on email address sign-in as well as social account logins.

The email reads:

We’re making a change to how you log in to Spotify. Starting September 1, 2026, you’ll no longer be able to log in with your username. Instead, you can log in with your email.

Prefer to use a different email? You can change it in your account settings, or by tapping on the button below.

As far as we can tell, Spotify hasn’t communicated this change via its blog or forums.

The change kicks in on September 1, 2026 – a little over two months from now.
