Some Google Pixel owners can’t reply to emails in Gmail as keyboard fails to appear

A bug in Gmail affecting Google Pixel owners is making it difficult to reply to emails, as the AI-powered “Help me write” is getting in the way.

Whether composing or replying to an email in the Gmail app, the keyboard is supposed to pop up as soon as the text field appears. But, for some Google Pixel users, that’s not happening.

A thread on Reddit captured around a dozen reports of Pixel owners – and one Galaxy owner – who have found that the keyboard isn’t appearing when they try to reply to an email. The “Help me write” placeholder shows, but there’s no way to start typing anything. Some have found that the button usually used to hide the keyboard appears, and tapping on that seems to reset the issue and let the keyboard reappear when you tap on the text field.

The exact cause here in unclear, but it seems to be rooted in Gmail, as affected users haven’t mentioned problems in any other apps.

Apparently, another quick workaround is just turning your phone into landscape mode, which briefly brings back the keyboard until the next time you need to reply to an email.
