Samsung is expanding the support timeline for its latest Galaxy Watch models, with Galaxy Watch 9 and Watch Ultra 2 getting 5 years of Wear OS updates.
Where Android smartphones have been getting expanded support timelines over the past few years, Samsung is now giving its smartwatches the same treatment. Starting with Galaxy Watch 9 and Galaxy Watch Ultra 2, Wear OS updates are now promised for 5 years, up from the previous 4. Even Google’s Pixel Watch series only gets 3 years.
Samsung confirmed to SamMobile that this is both full major Wear OS upgrades for five years (or five updates) as well as five years of security patches.
It’s certainly good news, though we suspect most users are upgrading their smartwatch a bit more regularly than that anyway. But with stronger chips and bigger batteries, Samsung’s latest generation is certainly ready to go the distance over the next few years. Both of these watches also ship with Wear OS 7, the first to do so, which is also available on Pixel Watch.
Galaxy Watch 9 starts at $379 with Watch Ultra 2 and its huge 800 mAh battery at $699. Both are available for pre-order now.
