Ahead of the start of developer verification next month, Google is now rolling out Android’s “advanced” flow for sideloading.
As detailed earlier this year, Android is getting a sideloading flow for apps without a verified developer. This “advanced” flow is designed to increase friction for the sake of user protection, with the biggest change being a one-time, one-day waiting period between enabling the install of apps from unverified developers and actually being able to install said app.
Google confirmed in June that its developer verification changes are on track to launch in September in select regions.
Now, Google is rolling out the “advanced” sideloading flow.
Detailed in a post, Google is now rolling the “first version” of this new process. Users will need to go into Developer options and turn on “Allow apps from unverified developers.” After that point, warnings will appear before the user can start the one-time, 24-hour waiting period which is completed by going back to that same page. The setting can be turned on temporarily (for seven days) or indefinitely.
The post further notes that ADB installs are not affected here and that developer options can be turned off after enabling the advanced flow.
The “Android Developer Verifier” app announced in March is what delivers this functionality, but it is “rolling out gradually.” Developer verification starts on September 30 in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand, but will go global next year.
