Walmart finally supporting in-store tap to pay with Google Pay

Google announced today that tap to pay with Google Pay is coming to Walmart stores in the US.

The retailer has historically been one of the lone holdouts against supporting NFC payments. Instead, it wanted customers to use the QR code-based Walmart Pay inside the Walmart app.

That’s now changing, with Google Pay support starting to roll out to select Walmart stores and Sam’s Club locations in the US beginning August 24.

The plan is to add support at all US stores and clubs by the end of 2026, with fuel stations coming online in mid-2027.

Walmart says “Tap to Pay gives customers and members another familiar and convenient way to pay at checkout using contactless payment methods.” Stores will continue to support cash, credit cards, and Walmart Pay.
