Google says Chromebook updates end in 2034, ‘many’ models move to Googlebook OS

As Googlebook arrives, Google is offering a bit more information on what Chromebook owners can expect going forward.

Google has said that Chromebook updates will continue in the Googlebook era, while some models will also be eligible for upgrades. On a support page, Google provides a bit more detail.

Starting with Chromebook updates, Google says that “Chromebooks you have today will continue to receive updates through their supported lifetime,” with all Enterprise and Education management capabilities remaining in place as well:

• We will maintain support for current Chromebook devices running ChromeOS as outlined in our Auto Update policy and the Chromebooks you have today will continue to receive updates through their supported lifetime. Chromebooks remain available for all school and enterprise deployments today.
• Your active ChromeOS Enterprise Upgrade and ChromeOS Education Upgrade associated with existing devices will remain and maintain their current management capabilities.

Google adds that similar management tools will be coming to Googlebook, but they’re not available yet. Apparently they’re planned for the second half of 2027. Meanwhile, Google says that “many” existing Chromebook models will be eligible to transition from ChromeOS to Googlebook OS. More details are coming “soon.” A later note specifies that Google is referring to “newer commercial Chromebook models.”

• Many of our newest Chromebook devices will be eligible to transition over to Googlebook OS. Details on migration paths and device eligibility will be shared soon.
• We are working to deliver a comprehensive management experience for Googlebooks which will start rolling out in the second half of 2027.

Notably, Google specifies a year when ChromeOS updates will come to an end in a later note – 2034. Chromebooks with a 10-year update policy that extends past 2034 will be eligible to move to Googlebook OS.

ChromeOS devices will continue to receive regular updates and security patches through mid-2034. For qualifying devices purchased today whose 10-year support lifecycle extends beyond 2034, Google is committed to supporting your transition to Googlebook OS, with many devices offering direct migration paths.

This 2034 date was previously mentioned in a court case as the time when Google would “phase out” ChromeOS.

Finally, in regards to apps, Google says that it is “committed” to web developers despite an increased focus on Android apps on Googlebooks.

Googlebook pre-orders are open now, with models shipping in early October.
