New 2015 Moto G renders look better than real thing, but still thick with lackluster specs

Steve Hemmerstoffer, otherwise known as the infamous @OnLeaks on Twitter, has posted some new images online (translated URL) that purportedly show an updated 2015 Moto G, the budget smartphone from Motorola that comes in just above the really-budget Moto E. Hemmerstoffer is well known for having leaked accurate renders of the LG G4 months before it was unveiled by the company, and has as of late posted renders of new Samsung Note and Galaxy Tab S iterations.

In his post about the 2015 Moto G, Hemmerstoffer says that these renders were made “on behalf of a manufacturer of accessories,” and that there may be discrepancies between these and the final release’s design, but that these are probably “not too far from the truth.” The renders here definitely look very good – better than real, even.

The third-generation Moto G is expected to sport a Qualcomm Snapdragon S410 processor with four cores clocked at 1.4GHz, 1GB of RAM, a 13-megapixel rear-facing and 5-megapixel front-facing camera, and expandable memory through a microSD slot.

I have two complaints in the event that these renders are real: one would be that the phone still looks pretty thick, and the second would be that the specifications being presented here aren’t what I’d be hoping for. The 2014 Moto G was around 11 millimeters thick. For reference, the Samsung Galaxy S6 is only 6.8 millimeters thick. Anyone who has held a Moto G knows it’s a chunky monkey. Also both the Snapdragon 410 and the 400 – the processor in the first two generations of the Moto G – are, from reports, quite similar in real-world performance, as the S410 has slower core speeds to generate less heat and the new graphics processor is essentially different just in that it’s designed to work with the new 64bit architecture. Hopefully one or both of these complaints will change from now until an unveiling.
