Samsung’s Galaxy S7 and S7 launch event is now just a few days away and we’re now at the point where there’s little we think we don’t know about the next flagships from Sammy. Perhaps the one thing that has confused us is what I/O technology it’ll be equipped with. Amazingly, it’s easily the most discussed thing currently in our 9to5Google staff group chat.
A couple of months back, the Wall Street Journal reported that the S7 and S7 Edge would have a USB Type-C port. Some of our own sources — having spent time with the device — say the same. On the flip-side, other sources are adamant that the phones will have Micro USB and not Type-C. This leads us to the highly speculative conclusion that perhaps the connector will depend on the region, similar to the processor situation. Some regions (namely China and the US) will get a Snapdragon 820 processor, while others will get the Exynos 8890.
To further add to the uncertainty surrounding the Micro USB situation, hands-on images have emerged on Weibo showing the Galaxy S7 Edge, with the bottom edge clearly in view. The port on the bottom clearly isn’t the reversible oval-shaped Type-C connector.
Going based on the fact that this has the same stealthy black design of previous leaks, we’re pretty sure this is the new Galaxy S7 Edge. Which begs the question: Were rumors of a Type C connector false? Or is it as we suspect: There are different models for different regions? Thankfully we only have a few days to wait before we know all the ins and outs.
We’ll be in Barcelona this weekend for the Galaxy S7 launch, and will bring you full coverage of Samsung’s next major Unpacked event.
