HTC might finally launch an Android Wear smartwatch in June

Rumors of an HTC-made smartwatch have been around for quite some time. In fact, in the build up to last year’s HTC One M9 launch, it was expected that the company would announce an Android Wear device — or smartwatch of some kind — alongside 2015’s all-metal gold-tinted flagship. Instead, the company showed off its Vive VR headset and a fitness band. Now, it looks like its smartwatch plans are close to fruition.

In a tweet referencing a previous rumor, Evan Blass has stated that a smartwatch from HTC will arrive in the week of June 6th. It was expected that the Taiwanese company would launch the wearable in April, but clearly (if his information is accurate) those plans didn’t work out.

The reason for the delay isn’t given, and likely isn’t that important, although it could signal that the device isn’t of high priority to HTC. The flip-side is that it could be so important, HTC is  “obsessed” with making sure that it’s perfect prior to announcement.

As far as features and specifications go, we don’t know much at all about this rumored device. It’s expected that it will feature a similar 360 x 360 round display to the Huawei Watch, and will more than likely include Qualcomm’s recently-announced Snapdragon Wear 2100 chip for wearables. But apart from that, any other guesses would be highly speculative.

It’ll be interesting to see how HTC approaches the Android Wear market, if at all. We’ll keep our eyes peeled for anything else relating to the rumored watch.
