Google’s latest instant answer will measure your Internet speed right from search

Google has been rolling out more and more instant answers – where the search-engine provides the answer immediately, rather than requiring you to click on an external link. Just yesterday it added song lyrics, and it now appears to be testing a built-in Internet speed test …

The test was spotted by Moz marketeer Pete Myers when he Googled for ‘check Internet speed,’ but currently appears to be a limited test as several of us have tried it from multiple locations with no success.

The test is conducted by Google’s Measurement Lab, and anyone can use it by going direct to the tool. However, it wasn’t accurate for me, most likely because I’m in London and the test was running on a server in California.

It’s not quite an instant answer, as you still have to click the button to start the test, unlike the fast.com tool provided by Netflix – now my favorite speed test.
