Team collaboration tools are now a dime a dozen and increasingly relying on third-party integrations to stand out. As part of that battle, HipChat today has announced deep integration with Google Apps that adds Calendar and Drive right into the main interface of the chat app.
The goal of this Google Apps integration is to obfuscate the need to open another tab or launch other apps to see Calendar and Drive. With calendars available right from HipChat’s sidebar, team members can share them and schedule events without going to the full site.
Tabs at the top allow users to switch between a personal calendar and the shared work one. The interface is quite reminiscent of the mobile app, with a month view and a list of a selected day’s events underneath. Shared calendars can be customized on a per-room basis so that each room automatically opens to a specific calendar.
The Drive integration also exists in the sidebar and allows for quick access to your files, as well as those shared to you. In addition to opening, users can quickly share to all participants of the current room from an inline interface.
These integrations appear quite useful as many teams already extensively use Google Apps. Unfortunately, these features only apply to HipChat’s web/desktop interface and not the mobile apps. To access, head to HipChat’s marketplace to add the individual integrations.
