Google says more than 20M students now using Chromebooks, up from 10M last year

Following its big day yesterday, Google today announced some impressive numbers concerning the growing use of Chromebooks in education. According to the company, more than 20 million students are now using Chromebook in their education environment.

In a blog post, Google’s Rajen Sheth made the announcement, claiming that “more than 20 million students worldwide are using Chromebook to create, collaborate, and communicate.” Google’s announcement comes as a celebration of World Teachers’ Day, with the company giving credit to the teacher’s who change the course of their students’ lives.

The 2o million active users number is up from the 10 million users reported at this point last year. Chromebooks have long been believed to be successful in education, with Google even taking the lead over Microsoft and Apple. One thing that will continue to help the growth of Chromebooks in education is the rollout of the Play Store on Chrome OS.

In terms of the overall market, a report back in August claimed that we will see over 17 million Chromebooks out in the wild by 2023.

Google also today announced a way for teachers to share their creativity with one another; Education on Air. This program is designed to help educators collaborate with one another, no matter where they are in the world and comes following its successful start last year.

Today we’re announcing a way for teachers to share their creativity with one another: Education on Air, a free online conference to celebrate educators around the world and allow teachers to learn from each other.

Last year at the first Education on Air, more than 50,000 participants from almost every country heard from First Lady Michelle Obama, LeVar Burton, Michael Fullen and hundreds of educators about education and technology. This year, you can choose from 100+ sessions and engage with educators globally around key themes:

  • It takes a teacher to spark creativity: keynotes on skills of the future from Julia GillardLinda Darling HammondProfessor Robert WinstonJennie Magiera and many more.
  • It takes a teacher to improve student learning: research on how educators have transformed schools and measured their impact.
  • It takes a teacher to prepare students for the world: tips and tools to help boost student engagement, collaboration and productivity in the classroom.

Google’s Education on Air will take place on December 3rd. More information can be found here.
