Google Maps recently launched a major update for incident reporting, but it’s now rolling out a slight change that marks the location of police activity rather than speed traps.
In July, Google Maps launched a heavily revamped incident reporting system across its mobile apps and, finally, Android Auto and CarPlay. The new feature makes it much easier to report various incidents along the road including construction, lane closures, and crashes.
One of the options was for “speed traps,” giving users a way to alert other drivers of a hidden police officers. However, that’s not always a fitting report. Sometimes drivers may want to report the presence of a police officer that is directing traffic or perhaps in the middle of a stop on the side the road.
As such, Google Maps has quietly updated the reporting page to remove “Speed trap” and replace it with a more generic “Police” report. The option has also moved higher up on the list. Notably, Google showed this wording and position back when the new system was announced in July, but as recently as October it was still called “Speed trap.”
We haven’t yet been able to test whether or not this update applies to Android Auto or CarPlay, but it stands to reason that it probably does.
