Google Fiber has new Core 1 Gig, Home 3 Gig, and Edge 8 Gig plans/branding

Over the past few weeks, Google Fiber — or “GFiber” — introduced new plans (Core 1 Gig, Home 3 Gig, and Edge 8 Gig) with updated branding and features in two cities.

In Huntsville, Alabama and Nashville, Tennessee, GFiber went from offering plans branded as 1 Gig, 2 Gig, 5 Gig, and 8 Gig to Core 1 Gig, Home 3 Gig, and Edge 8 Gig.

This was introduced starting in November.

Core 1 Gig costs the same $70 per month as the original 1 Gig plan from 2012. It’s symmetrical 1 gig upload and download speeds, while you get a Multi-Gig Wi-Fi 6E Router and Wi-Fi 6E Mesh Extenders.

…designed for people who use the internet for the everyday — like browsing and streaming — in an apartment or smaller home.

Home 3 Gig at $100/month replaces the 2 Gig ($100) and 5 Gig ($125) plans. GFiber says this is for “those who rely on the internet every day, all day, especially those who are working from home or have busy online households.” It’s also symmetrical and you get a Multi-Gig Wi-Fi 6E Router with up to two Wi-Fi 6E Mesh Extenders, as well as:

  • “Free professional installation, including Priority Room Optimization to bring additional wired connectivity to the rooms that matter most.”
  • “The option to purchase Internet Battery Backup for an additional $10/month (plus applicable taxes and fees).”

Edge 8 Gig $150/month (like before) gets a Multi-Gig Wi-Fi 6E Router, up to 2 Wi-Fi 6E Mesh Extenders, and the Internet Battery Backup is included for up to 2 hours of uptime. As a reminder, “fiber optic technology uses light — rather than electrical impulses,” so that connectivity continues during power outages. However, the router and Fiber Jack still need electricity.

That’s where our Internet Battery Backup comes in. It provides temporary power to your GFiber router and Fiber Jack during a typical outage, designed to automatically turn on when the power goes out*. This gives you time to save or even continue to work on battery powered laptops or devices, stream shows, or shut down your gadgets safely.

Finally, you get Uptime Guarantee “if your internet connection falls below 99.9% uptime in a given month, you’ll receive a 25% credit on your monthly bill.” That translates to over 45 minutes
