The Qi specs get updated pretty regularly, with the newest version now being Qi 2.3, but there’s nothing exactly groundbreaking going on here.
In researching the Galaxy S26 series’ funky wireless charging situation this week, we noticed that the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) has quietly launched the Qi 2.3 spec update. This latest version is the third update since Qi2’s initial launch, but also the smallest since that former leap.
The description of what’s new in Qi 2.3, per the WPC, reads:
System gain change reporting for a power transmitter
And that’s it.
The new update was made in December 2025, the WPC says, but the page wasn’t updated until sometime towards the end of January to offer some public acknowledgement.
There’s probably more going on under the hood, but it’s a much smaller update compared to Qi 2.1 and Qi 2.2. So far, no devices have been announced with Qi 2.3.
Meanwhile, Samsung’s new Galaxy S26 series continues to largely ignore the Qi2 standard’s use of magnets, with no native support in the latest phones. It’s especially confounding as Samsung did adopt Qi 2.2.1’s faster 25W charging rates, which requires magnetic alignment to work.
More on Qi2:
- Galaxy S26 series gets faster wired and wireless charging, but you’ll need your own Qi2 magnets
- Aukey’s tiny new charging station bundles Qi2 with four 200W retractable USB-C cables
- There’s finally another new Android phone with Qi2 coming, but will there be more in 2026?
