MediaTek Dimensity 8550 is ready for Gemini Intelligence on affordable Android flagships

MediaTek has just announced its new Dimensity 8550 chipset, a minor update in most ways, but with the foundational support needed for Android devices that support Gemini Intelligence.

Google’s “next big thing” for Android is Gemini Intelligence, a new layer for the software that will deliver new advanced AI features that go a bit beyond what we’re used to seeing today.

The first of these were announced at “The Android Show” earlier this month.

But the requirements for Gemini Intelligence are not exactly low, with support for Gemini Nano V3 being the kicker among last-gen chipsets.

MediaTek has just announced the new Dimensity 8550, a chip for affordable Android flagships – the “flagship killer” segment, if you will – that includes support for Gemini Nano V3. MediaTek says:

Powered by MediaTek’s powerful NPU 880 and an ever-growing generative AI ecosystem, the Dimensity 8550 now includes an LLM Booster and support for the latest Google Gemini Nano V3, providing unparalleled capabilities and future-ready performance.

The new chipset is a moderate evolution over the Dimensity 8500 – just announced earlier this year – otherwise, packing the same 1+3+4 core configuration using exclusively Cortex-A725 cores in an “All Big Core” CPU setup. The Dimensity 8550 is, looking at all of the specs MediaTek lists, purely an AI boost to its existing chip thanks to an NPU upgrade.

Based on Google’s provided requirements, it seems like devices with Dimensity 8550 will be eligible for Gemini Intelligence, provided they meet the rest of the requirements, including 12GB of RAM and the needed cadence for Android updates.

Some devices that use Dimensity 8500 include Motorola Edge 70 Pro, Xiaomi 17T, and Poco X8 Pro.
