Spotify app for Android adding playlist folders, ‘Reshuffle,’ and more

Spotify is rolling out some major updates to its mobile app, including on Android, which enable support for playlist folders and the ability to “reshuffle” your queue.

In a series of quality-of-life updates, Spotify has four changes to share:

  • Playlist folders on mobile
  • Upgrades to playlist and queue controls
  • Background downloads on iOS
  • “Reshuffle” your queue

Only three of those apply to Android – background downloads have been supported for Spotify’s Android app for years, and it’s frankly wild that iOS users still have to deal with so many problems around downloading content for offline playback without leaving the app open. It’s a problem across tons of apps.

On the Android side of things, there are some welcome changes.

Playlist folders are super useful for organizing your playlists and saved albums, but they’ve always been a desktop exclusive. Now, on mobile, you can create and manage folders through the “+” menu.

Playlists and queues are also getting better control over tracks, with the ability to select multiple tracks at a time to remove them from the queue or from a playlist. The queue is also getting a one-tap “Reshuffle” button that can change up the order instead of double-tapping on the shuffle button.

All of these updates are rolling out now, though everything except for the ability to select multiple tracks at once will be exclusive to Premium members.
