Cash App is the next brand trying its hand at offering phone plans to its fans

MVNOs have been around for ages, offering traditional and prepaid cell plans typically at lower prices than national network operators like Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile, but the last couple of years have seen an explosion in MVNO choices. Cash App is just the latest non-mobile network to throw its hat in the ring, and it’s all based around AT&T’s network.

Well, maybe not entirely based around AT&T. As reported by The Verge, Cash App’s new MVNO — Cash App Mobile, appropriately — offering comes from a partnership with Gigs, an MVNE-esque startup out of the Y Combinator world that provides white-label MVNO offerings to any company that wants it. Fintech companies like Klarna in the US and Lendable in the UK have offered $40-per-month unlimited plans through Gigs’ white-label pipeline, and last September, with a formal partnership with AT&T now in hand, it became obvious that even more brands were going to prep to jump on board.

Cash App is that next brand, delivering the exact same $40-per-month unlimited offering as Klarna did last summer and basing it on AT&T’s network. That’s far from a groundbreaking deal, but Cash App promises to make up for its relatively typical pricing structure by giving Cash App users — and young adults specifically — a plan that syncs with the mobile wallet they might already rely on for most purchases. Cash App’s announcement says users can “manage their mobile service, spending, and saving all in one place.”

The plan also includes “premium” 5G data, “unlimited HD streaming,” 10GB of monthly hotspot usage in the United States, and data roaming in Canada and Mexico. The company also intends to tie the MVNO to its in-house rewards program, as well as its child and teen account types. It’s rolling out to select users now with “broader availability” coming soon.
