Nothing just announced that it would be, at least for this year, killing off its bargain CMF Phone due to the increasing cost of components but, somehow, “Nothing Phone (4b)” is about to debut as a more affordable release.
In a video scheduled through YouTube, Nothing teases the “Phone (4b)” for a July 7 launch. The company cheekily says:
Woah, we’ve never done a (b) before. New series? New bee movie? Join us on 7 July at 11:00 BST to see what we’ve been working on.
Nothing co-founder Akis Evangelidis shed a bit more light in a post on Twitter/X, where he confirms that Nothing Phone (4b) will sit below Phone (4a) in the lineup, meaning it will be more affordable as well. That’s no surprise given the name, but it does beg the question of how. The CMF Phone sat in the more affordable slot for the past two years, hitting the $200~ segment where the base Phone (a) would start around $300~. It stands to reason that Phone (4b) is aiming for that lower segment – also covered by last year’s controversial Phone (3a) Lite – but Nothing said just days ago that the increasing cost of memory effectively made the CMF Phone impossible to release this year.
Whatever the case, at least we have some idea of what to expect from the design.
The thumbnail on that video showcases design sketches of Nothing Phone (4a), Phone (4a) Pro, and a previously-unseen third device. It stands to reason that’s probably this new device, but it’s a toss up seeing as Nothing has thrown up design sketches to throw leaks off before.
What do you think of the potential design?
