Pixel Watch 5 leaks detail new ‘Pyrite’ color, higher $399 starting price

Ahead of Google’s launch event which is now confirmed for August 12, a pair of new leaks reveal some of the company’s plans which, unfortunately, do include a pretty considerable price hike.

Dealabs reports that the Pixel Watch 5 series will consist of two sizes with two variants each, a total of four different smartwatch variations, just at a higher price tag.

Like the Pixel 11 series, this report says that Google will up Pixel Watch 5 prices by $50 or so on each variant, with a new starting price of $399. Pixel Watch 4’s $349 price tag was already on the higher end, but this new starting price jumps up to match that of Apple Watch Series 11.

Here’s the breakdown:

Pixel Watch 5 (41mm)Pixel Watch 5 (45mm)
Bluetooth/Wi-Fi$399 / €419 / £369$429 / €449 / £399
LTE$499 / €519 / £469$529 / €549 / £499

It’s roughly a 15% price hike year-over-year, but still noteworthy since this is the first series-wide rise in pricing ever for the Pixel Watch lineup – the original Pixel Watch started at $349 too.

It’s not hard to assume why prices are going up. Between RAMageddon and Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon Wear Elite chipset – the latter not confirmed, but heavily implied – Google’s material costs have most definitely gone up this year. That said, it’s going to be a tough one as, based on what we’ve seen thus far, there are no clear upgrades coming to this smartwatch, meaning it’s all likely under the hood or software-based.

There are some hardware changes, though.

Both Dealabs and Nieuwe Mobiel report that Pixel Watch 5 will have four colors including:

  • Natural Silver – Polished, 41mm & 45mm
  • Dark Anthracite – Matte, 41mm & 45mm
  • Warm Gold – Polished, 41mm only
  • Pyrite – Matte, 41mm & 45mm

Nieuwe Mobiel also posted a mockup depicting this new color, which looks like a matte gold or perhaps tan-ish release. Dealabs, notably, claims that green is in play, but the natural color of pyrite is more of a gold in the first place.

The polished silver was previously found in the wild – specifically in the middle of the ocean.

Technically, this is a drop in the number of available colors. Pixel Watch 4 included “Polished Silver,” “Matte Black,” “Champagne Gold” (41mm only), and “Satin Moonstone” (45mm) only. But having the “signature” color this year across both sizes is certainly a better play, as it allows everyone to get that new variation.

Google has confirmed an August 12 event to launch its new Pixel devices, with today’s report claiming an August 20 release date.
