Xbox Cloud Gaming will limit players to 15 hours per month before they have to pay more

Microsoft is making a change to Xbox Cloud Gaming that will place a limit of 15 hours a month or less on players before they have to pay more for cloud gaming.

In a post today, Microsoft details that Xbox Game Pass subscribers will now be limited to a set number of hours per month, a restriction that does not exist today. Limits depend on the Game Pass subscription tier, ranging from 5-15 hours per month.

  • Game Pass Ultimate: 15 hours
  • Game Pass Premium: 10 hours
  • Game Pass Essential: 5 hours

Microsoft says that the change will impact “4% of Game Pass subscribers.”

Once someone uses up their allotted hours, more hours will be available for purchase through the Xbox Store. Pricing has not been announced, with more details to come in November when the change actually kicks in. Players will also be able to directly purchase cloud gaming hours even if they are not active Game Pass subscribers.

Why the change? The company explains it is “because the cost of providing cloud gaming grows as more people use it and play for longer,” presumably all the more so in the midst of RAMageddon.
