Android 17 QPR1 changes some Pixel status bar icons

This month’s stable release of Android 17 QPR1 comes with some unexpected status bar icon changes on Pixel.

The silent or mute icon goes from a crossed-out speaker to a bell.

This might be an accidental regression as Google switched from the bell to the speaker in Android 14. Notably, this change was not present during the Android 17 QPR1 Beta cycle and only went live with the stable OTA this week.

The speaker icon is still live in 17 QPR2 Beta 5. (Meanwhile, the switcher at the top of the volume slider still uses the bell.)

Another icon change further complicates whether this tweak was intentional. The VPN icon is now much thicker and filled in, with this update also only appearing with the stable release.

We’ll know this was a mistake if Google changes it back in future releases, though any fix may not arrive until the sizable QPR2 update in December. Android 17 QPR1 is not yet available for the Pixel 11 series.
