According to a new report from Bloomberg, Samsung plans to take the curved display technology it used to make its recently launched Galaxy Round smartphone one step further with a new Galaxy device next year. The device will apparently feature a curved display that “wraps around the edges” forming a three-sided screen:
Samsung Electronics Co. plans to release a Galaxy smartphone next year with a display that wraps around the edges so users can read messages or monitor stocks while looking from an angle, according to two people familiar with the plans.
The phone will use an upgraded version of Samsung’s technology called Youm, currently featured in the curved Galaxy Round handset, the people said, asking not to be identified because the plans haven’t been released.
The report adds that Samsung could use the new display on its Galaxy S or Note lineup, but could also move to introduce an all new line-up of devices with the three-sided display. Samsung will apparently “have each side of the display operate independently,” allowing users to view, for example, messages or stock info at a glance along the edge of the device.
No word on a specific release date, but Bloomberg’s sources say you can expect to see it sometime in the last half of 2014. It sounds a lot like the curved prototype Samsung had at CES this year (pictured above).
