Google announced some new additions to Google Play services for developers today with the biggest being that the Appurify team, an app testing platform, is joining Google. That means that the freemium service will soon be available to developers through Google Play services. Google also announced some other new services for developers and users today including new features for gaming and direct carrier billing for more devices.
Appurify’s service, which offers cross-platform device testing for app developers, global device support, and connectivity and network simulation brings a lot of new testing tools that weren’t previously available in Google Play services for developers. Google last year opened up other new developer services like beta testing, translations, and staged rollout, but Appurify features will mean developers will be able to complete the entire app testing procedure without using a third-party service.
As for other Play Services features, Google announced the Play Games app will game new enhanced user profiles, bookmarks of saved games with screenshots, while developers get access to a new Quests feature for easily creating in-game challenges for users on the fly. Google also noted that Google Play Games has become the fastest growing mobile game network of all time with 100m new users in past 6 months alone.
Lastly, Google announced its expanding the direct carrier billing feature it previously rolled out for smartphones to tablets. That means if you already have direct carrier billing setup on your phone, you’ll now be able to purchase Play content charged to your carrier on your tablet as well.
Google confirmed that it will continue to offer Appurify as a cross-platform service, allowing developers the benefit of using it to test both Android and iOS versions of their apps.
The new features are rolling out soon through Google Play services and the Play Games app.
