Samsung’s upcoming foldable lineup includes its first new mainstream form factor in years, as the “Wide” device enters the fold (ba dum) as a second book-style device. In a new leak of dummy units, we’re getting a better look at just how different the Galaxy Z Fold 8 “Wide” will be.

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 sounds pretty familiar based on initial leaks, but Samsung is apparently making a tweak to the selfie camera cutout that sounds interesting, but I’m curious if it’s something anyone really cares about.

All eyes are on Samsung’s next book-style foldable, with the “Wide” release reportedly adopting a whole new form factor. According to a known leaker, Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8 “Wide” will have slightly different dimensions than initially expected, both in that it’s thinner and has an inner display more like an iPad.

The Galaxy Z Fold 7 took many Android fans by surprise last year, when Samsung — a company typically dedicated to making small changes over the course of many generations — finally leapt ahead to compete with its foldable competition. While it would be silly to expect the same result with this year’s upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 8, Samsung does appear to be making one change no one saw coming: a thicker design.

After several generations using the same wired charging speeds, it sounds like the Galaxy Z Fold 8 will finally usher in quicker speeds via new 45W fast charging.

Every sign we have is pointing to a more expansive Galaxy Z-series launch than usual this summer. In addition to follow-ups on last year’s Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Flip 7, we’re also expecting Samsung to bring a wider book-style foldable to market, just in time for Apple to allegedly launch a similar product. After several months of vague rumors and some software leaks, we’re finally getting some more concrete spec details.

Samsung’s foldables — and, really, foldables in general — have come a long way since their first couple of generations, and nowhere is that clearer than in the durability realm. This summer’s upcoming Galaxy Z-series, including that newly-added “Wide Fold,” might come with a new software trick that helps keep that inner display from potential debris.

Samsung’s feeling reinvigorated in the foldable game. After catapulting itself back into the conversation with last year’s Galaxy Z Fold 7, the company recently launched a tri-fold model that, despite its sky-high price, can’t seem to stay in stock. We know Samsung is working on at least two additional book-style foldables for later this year, and now, its wider alternative is showing up with a fresh One UI 9 build.

The display crease has been a sticking point on Samsung’s folding Galaxy phones for years, but the company recently showed off a new tech that seems to fix it. According to a new report, a key part of that is a second layer of ultra-thin glass.

Foldables have come a long way since the days of 2019’s original Galaxy Fold. We’ve seen successors from both Samsung and its rivals introduce slimmer, more durable designs with larger displays and fewer compromises. That said, one obvious blemish remains running straight down the middle of any given folding screen. If Samsung has its way though, that soon could be a thing of the past.
