Gear VR for Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge now available online for $199

Samsung announced today that owners of the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge can now order the Gear VR Innovator Edition online for $199 through either the Samsung website or BestBuy.com. The headset won’t be available in Best Buy retail stores until May 15th, however…

The new Gear VR was first announced back at Mobile World Congress alongside the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, and works with both devices. And so you don’t end up draining your phone’s battery too quickly, it even includes a microUSB port for powering the unit separately. Samsung says that this new unit is more comfortable than the original model, which works only with the Galaxy Note 4. If you haven’t used a Gear VR, it’s pretty simple: you drop your phone in, strap it onto your face, and you’re ready to play games and view video with full 360-degree virtual reality.

Unfortunately there isn’t a lot of content available for the Gear VR just yet, but Samsung has content libraries for the VR headset within both its Samsung Apps Store and the Samsung Milk VR app. YouTube also has a collection of 360-degree videos that work with the Gear VR’s accelerometer, which are downright awesome to experience for yourself. Considering that Oculus VR’s first headset won’t hit the market until early 2016, and that they’re a partner in the creation of Samsung’s headset, $199 seems like a low asking price to us for a chance to be on the cutting edge as it happens.
