Evleaks shares an image of a mysterious new Huawei phone set for 2017 [Update: Mate 9 Lite]

Update: It appears Blass has deleted his tweet, which makes sense because it turns out that this device is just the Mate 9 Lite (or perhaps the already-announced Honor 6X?)

Evan Blass, otherwise known as Evleaks, has today shared an image of a supposed “Huawei GR5” smartphone set for sometime in 2017. That doesn’t make sense, however, since the Huawei GR5 is actually the name of the Huawei 5X for Canada. Still, this does appear to be a new Huawei phone…

The device, at least based on this render, appears to be an affordable version of the Mate 9 — sharing its dual camera set up, a fingerprint sensor right below that, and a flash. The front of the device looks a lot like the Honor 5X, and the device appears to be running an older version of EMUI.

This is all speculation on my part, however, as Evan himself hasn’t provided any details beyond saying that it’s called the GR5 (which, as I said, isn’t likely accurate), and that it will launch sometime next year. Stay tuned as we learn more about this phone in the coming months, but if I were to guess, it’s some kind of Honor 5X successor with Mate 9-like features in tow.
