#CorrosionGate: LG G Watch charging contacts causing injury for some owners

Pioneering the Android Wear platform, the LG G Watch and Samsung Gear Live have been met with mixed reviews as of yet. Most thoughts on the smartwatches have been about Android Wear as an operating system, but little has been said about either device’s actual hardware. It appears, though, that some thoughts are now coming out about the LG G Watch, and it doesn’t look so good.

According to numerous reports by LG G Watch-owners across the internet, the device’s charging contacts on its underside haven’t been built with sweaty arms in mind. Many users have seen the copper contacts slowly erode to the point of the device no longer being able to charge. This is a problem, obviously, and one that LG is likely going to have to address.

It’s being dubbed #CorrosionGate, but what’s interesting is that some G Watch owners have reported absolutely no problems despite constant usage and sweaty arms. On the other side of the equation though, extreme cases of this problem seem to have actually injured some people. The corrosion rubbing against the arm of some users has apparently rubbed it down to being pretty raw.

One self-proclaimed “sweaty bastard,” Derek Ross, says that he hasn’t had a problem:

I’m a sweaty bastard. Ask my wife. I’ve worn my LG G Watch nearly every day since June 26th. My contact points are just fine. I have not wiped them down. I have not cleaned them. They are not filled with greasy skin gunk. They are not corroded. I love this watch.
