Non-Sony VAIO smartphones might make an appearance at CES

Sony sold off its VAIO PC brand earlier this year to investment firm Japan Industrial Partners, but it looks like Sony’s ex-brand might have some interesting new technology up its sleeves for 2015. According to a new report this morning out of Japanese paper Nikkei, the company is working on a line of smartphones to be announced in the coming months. And they might be coming sooner than anyone might have expected—possibly next week at CES 2015.

We don’t know much about these phones based on this report, with the exception of it being likely that they’ll have 5-inch screens—and, assumably, ship with Android. Other than that tiny little detail though, this rumor doesn’t really have much meat to it.

But if VAIO does end up showing off a device at CES, it’s going to be interesting to see it do so at the same event of its previous owner. Sony has hyped its CES presence greatly over the course of the last few weeks, posting a “Welcome to the New World” teaser video hinting at Android Lollipop and a mysterious super-slim device. Whether or not VAIO has a smartphone ready for next week, we’ll be on the ground at CES to keep you updated on all the notable happenings.
