Google Cardboard expands to 39 languages in 100 countries as SDKs get updates

Google is going global with its affordable Virtual Reality platform. The Mountain View company has announced today that its Google Cardboard app is now available in 39 languages across 100 countries, and that the Cardboard developer documentation is also now published in 10 languages to help even more developers build Cardboard experiences…

The news comes via Google’s Developers blog, where the company also mentions that Cardboard apps have seen more than 15 million installs from Google Play:

Google Cardboard is bringing virtual reality worldwide. Starting today, the Google Cardboard app is available in 39 languages and over 100 countries on both Android and iOS devices. Additionally, the Cardboard developer docs are now published in 10 languages to help developers build great VR experiences. With more than 15 million installs of Cardboard apps from Google Play, we’re excited to bring VR to even more people around the world.

Additionally, Google says that the Cardboard SDKs for Android and Unity have been updated to “address [developers’] top two requests: drift correction and Unity performance.”

These improvements substantially decrease drift, especially on phones with lower-quality sensors. The Cardboard SDK for Unity now supports a fully Unity-native distortion pass. This improves performance by avoiding all major plugin overhead, and enables Cardboard apps to work with Metal rendering on iOS and multi-threaded rendering on Android. All of this adds up to better VR experiences for your users.

We told you last week that Google brought Cardboard support to its standalone Street View application. Today, the company made that feature official, and you can grab that app for either Android or iOS right now.

All of this comes hot on the heels of Mattel finally launching the View-Master VR headset for kids last week, which you can grab for $30.
