Despite not selling its flagship smartphone in the United States, Chinese smartphone manufacturer Huawei has a hold on the third-place position in the world, behind Samsung and Apple. According to a report today from The Wall Street Journal, however, Huawei hopes to expand the availability of its flagship smartphone to the United States very soon…
The report claims that beginning in 2016, Huawei plans to sell its flagship Mate 8 smartphone in the United States. The device went on sale in China this month for roughly $600. Huawei also plans to show off the Mate 8 at the Consumer Electronics Show next month.
Furthermore, Huawei plans to demo its Honor 5X smartphone at CES in Las Vegas. The Honor 5X is the company’s budget offering in China and goes for less than $300. The company also plans to showcase a new smartwatch at CES. Like the Mate 8, Huawei hopes to release both the Honor 5X and its new smartwatch in the United States in 2016, as well.
The U.S. market is strategically important for Huawei because it is the world’s biggest market for smartphones that retail for more than $500. But Huawei now has minimal presence there. Its U.S. expansion focuses on selling more high-end devices, manufacturing Google latest Nexus phone and new marketing campaigns.
Earlier today, we reported that Huawei plans to introduce a made-for-women version(s) of its popular Huawei Watch at CES next month. Furthermore, we reported that Huawei is working on a second-gen Huawei Watch for the second half of 2016. One source told us that the company is working on a cellular model of its smartwatch, which hopefully will have a better fate than the LG Watch Urbane 2nd gen. LTE.
Earlier this month, Huawei sub-brand Honor sent out invites to a pre-CES 2016 event during which it’s possible the company could debut the Honor 5X in the United States.
