Most Android enthusiasts have likely never hard of the Snapdragon 210. But that didn’t stop LG from putting the super-low-end chip in the Tribute 5 and selling it on Boost Mobile, Sprint’s prepaid brand. Yet, this $100 smartphone isn’t all bad and manages to integrate software and hardware features that were at one point in LG’s flagship devices…
The phone’s 5-inch 854 x 480 IPS display translates to a 196 PPI and is powered by the Snapdragon 210 with 1GB of RAM. The 1.1GHz quad-core chipset was first announced in September of 2014 and meant for ‘high-volume’ sub-$100 phones. It supports Bluetooth 4.1, 802.11n WiFI, LTE, and QuickCharge 2.0. However, the Tribute doesn’t have the right chip for QuickCharge, so you’re stuck charging the 2,125 mAh battery at a regular speed. Other specs include a 5MP front camera and a 5MP rear camera.
The phone runs Android 5.1 Lollipop with LG’s usual skin and software features. As the phone’s volume and power button are on the back of the device, it has support for Knock On. First introduced on the LG G2, it allows users to wake and put their phone to sleep by tapping the screen twice. It also has a Motorola-like gesture to get immediate access to the front facing camera.
While all the improvements we see on smartphones are usually at the high-end, after a couple of years those features eventually trickle down to entry-level smartphones. The LG Tribute 5 is available now for $100 at Boost Mobile stores and on their website.
