Since its launch last year, the Gear S2 has gained new features, watchfaces, and hardware variants. Beginning next month, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon will sell a 3G/4G cellular version of the Samsung Gear S2 Classic.
Users will be able to send/receive SMS and see other notifications without the need of a smartphone. The Classic version has a metal body and leather strap and is sold at a $50 premium over the plastic and rubber Gear S2. The carriers have yet to announce pricing for the smartwatch, but expect it be sold with a two-year contract. The 4G speed cited by Samsung is not LTE, but rather just HSPA+.
The 300mAh battery is 50mAh larger than the one the S2 and is rated for 2-3 days of usage. Fortunately, Tizen is a low-power wearable operating system. Other specs include a 1.2-inch circular super AMOLED display with 302PPI, a dual-core 1GHz processor, 512MB of RAM, and 4GB of storage. At CES, Samsung announced that the device would get Samsung Pay support and iOS comparability later this year.
The three carriers will begin selling the Gear S2 Classic on March 11.
