PSA: Huawei Watch update to Android Wear 6.0 begins rolling out today

If you’re a Huawei Watch owner, you’re likely to be glad to hear this one: the latest version of Android Wear, bringing the software up to Marshmallow level, is set to roll out to the Chinese company’s flagship smartwatch offering beginning today…

The company announced the update in a thread on the Huawei Community forum. “The Huawei Watch update will be version 6.0, release MEC23L,” the company said. “This will be an OTA due for release beginning today.”

Release notes for the Moto 360 update were only just released last month, a day after Google officially announced that the update was coming. The update brings the following features among others:

– Ability to play sounds and take calls on watches with a speaker

– Support for sending WhatsApp, WeChat, Viber, Telegram, and Nextplus messages with your voice or via touch

– New gestures to control your watch with one hand

– Battery life improvements

– Language options for Mandarin, Cantonese, Indonesian, Polish, Dutch, and Thai

Most notably, the Huawei Watch has had speaker hardware on board since it was first released last year — although the software, until now, completely ignored its existence. This update enables the speaker, allowing you to take calls among other things.

The update has been a long time coming. Initially, this version of Android Wear was supposed to launch on the LG Watch Urbane 2nd gen. LTE, but that device was scrapped just before it launched. Only in the last couple of weeks have the new Moto 360 and Moto 360 Sport been some of the first devices to actually get the update.

Huawei Watch owners should see the update hitting their devices over the next few days.
