The US Consumer Product Safety Commission has once again made Samsung’s recall of the Note 7 official, extending its formal recall notice to replacement devices as well as original ones. Samsung had already instructed owners to cease using the devices and to return them for refund or replacement with alternative devices.
In an attempt to persuade former Note 7 owners to remain loyal to the brand, Samsung is now offering $100 credit to anyone exchanging their device for another Samsung phone …
Samsung announced the credit in an update to the recall notice on its U.S. website.
As a sign of our appreciation for your patience and loyalty, we are offering up to a $100 bill credit from select carrier or retail outlets if you exchange your Galaxy Note 7 for another Samsung smartphone, less any incentive credits already received.
If you already exchanged your Galaxy Note 7 device for another Samsung smartphone, you will receive up to a $75 bill credit from select carrier or retail outlets in addition to the $25 you previously received.
Those who exchange for other brands, or take a refund, continue to receive a $25 credit.
Of course, owners may also be left out of pocket for any accessories they purchased. A Reddit thread has reports from people successfully obtaining refunds for Note 7 accessories from Amazon even beyond the normal 30-day return period. The Verge says that the company has confirmed that this is official policy ‘in most cases.’
A company spokesperson confirmed that in most cases, its Note 7 refund policy does extend to accessories […]
Any Note 7 owners who now have products they cannot use can initiate the process by logging into their Amazon account and heading over to the Contact Us page. From there, you can select the product in question — you may have to select, “Choose A Different Order” to find products outside the 30-day refund window — and enter the required prompts. At the end of the page, you should be able to start an email, phone call, or text chat with Amazon support.
Consumer confusion over which devices are affected has led Samsung to send messages to Galaxy S7 owners, assuring them their device is safe. The cost to date of the recall has been estimated at $4-5B.
