Google confirmed last month that it would be launching two new Android Wear watches in early 2017, and now we’re getting our best look yet at what they’re actually going to look like on paper. A new report out of the usually-reliable Evan Blass (via VentureBeat) says that both devices will be LG-made and will be dubbed “LG Watch Sport” and “LG Watch Style”, as well as details each of the devices’ specifications…
We already had a pretty good idea of what Google has been planning (including some renders, which Evan says accurately depict the product) last summer thanks to a pair of reports out of Android Police, but now Evan has mostly corroborated those reports and provided more details about the two devices.
First up is the LG Watch Sport, which seems to be the “flagship” so to speak. That device has a 1.38-inch display with a resolution of 480×480, has a thickness of 14.2mm, brings IP68 certification, and will be available in two colors: “titanium” and “dark blue”. The Watch Sport also has slightly more RAM than the Style at 768MB, 4GB of storage, a 430mAh battery, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. Filling the extra thickness are radios for cellular connectivity (both 3G and LTE), as well as an NFC chip for Android Pay, a heart rate sensor, and GPS.
The LG Watch Style, the other hand, will be a bit more modest (and also more customizable, thanks to its interchangeable bands). The Style will reportedly have a 1.2-inch display at a resolution of 360×360, come in at 10.8mm thick, and will be available in three colors rather than just two: “titanium,” “silver,” and “rose gold.” This watch will seemingly forgo Android Pay compatibility and the cellular radios, and sport a lesser 512MB RAM, the same 4GB of storage space, a smaller 240mAh battery, IP67 water and dust resistance, and of course Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
Intriguingly, Evan Blass also mentions that both watches have a “digital crown” akin to the one on the Apple Watch. It’s still unclear what that means at this point, but it definitely sets these watches apart from the rest of the Android Wear herd.
On the software side, both watches will of course be launching with the delayed Android Wear 2.0, which is a complete overhaul of the wearable OS (announced all the way back at I/O 2016) featuring more customizable watch faces, as well as a plethora of new fitness and messaging features.
As we told you earlier, the watches are going to be shown off — now we’re hearing that it will be jointly by both LG and Google — at an event on Thursday, February 9th. Evan says that the two new watches will be sold starting the very next day in the US, and have a prominent place at LG’s booth next month at Mobile World Congress 2017. So stay tuned as usual as we learn more — and, eventually, get our hands on them ourselves.
