Report reiterates that 2nd gen. Huawei Watch will bring cellular model

A new report today says that Huawei is planning a second generation Huawei Watch for potential launch at Mobile World Congress next month in Barcelona, Spain. The watch is said to bring a “sportier” look compared to the first device, as well as a to-be-expected 42mm size and a 1.4-inch display. One major feature mentioned in the report, however, sounds awfully familiar…

As we first reported in December of 2015, the second generation Huawei Watch is once again said to come in a variant with cellular connectivity. Our sources said at the time that the device was scheduled for launch in the second half of 2016, but Google’s delay of Android Wear 2.0 probably pushed back that timeline. Here’s the relevant excerpt from our report:

…people familiar with the company’s plans have said that the second generation Huawei Watch is already in development and is scheduled to be released in the second half of 2016. Details on this device are sparse at this point (considering it’s still early in the product’s development), but one source says that the company is working on a cellular version of the device…

Evan Blass (via VentureBeat) adds that the watch will have “a built-in SIM card” and will, of course, be able to make phone calls. As mentioned, Huawei now “hopes” to launch the device at Mobile World Congress (where LG will reportedly be showing off its new Android Wear watches made in collaboration with Google), although said launch timeframe is not set in stone.

We’ll be on the ground at MWC, so stay tuned for more!
