Google Meet gets new ‘Start a call’ screen on Android

Google is working to upgrade the personal Meet calling experience to be more inline with the feature-rich enterprise version. As part of that, Google Meet has a new “Start a call” page.

When you tap the “New” FAB, it takes you to a revamped “Start a call” screen. “Search contacts or dial” is now in a pill-shaped field with larger buttons for Create link, Schedule, and New group underneath. Overall, it’s a more modern UI inline with Material 3.

The big change is a “Suggestions” grid of recent people replacing the long list of all your contacts. It’s much more of a quick dial-esque interface.

Old vs. new

Back on the homescreen, there’s now a dedicated “Code” shortcut in the search bar to start meetings that way.

Google first rolled out this homepage tweak and Start a call to enterprise users last November. It’s now appearing for personal (free) Google Accounts with version 266 of Meet for Android.
