After a closed beta program, the anti-AI camera replacement Zerocam is now available on Android via the Google Play Store.
For those unaware, unlike other camera apps, Zerocam aims to offer “zero post-processing” and a minimal photographic experience. There are no other modes, only the viewfinder and a shutter button. Images are shot in the RAW format, and then all HDR effects are removed to create something unlike your ordinary camera experience.
The Zerocam app has been on iOS since earlier this year and has already amassed a loyal user base that swears by the limited processing look. Having tested it for around a month, I’ve found that it simplifies the process of taking a photo and makes you think more about what and when you press the shutter button. It also helps that there are no distractions to speak of, but understandably, you might not like that you can’t access other on-device lenses and features. This is definitely not an app for everyone.
Zerocam only requires write-only camera and gallery access – which is specified during the initial setup. With the free tier, you can only take 5 photos per day, but an annual $9.99 or $0.99 fee unlocks truly unlimited process-free photos. However, for most people, the 5-a-day limit might actually provide a better framework for taking high-quality images. This limit makes you think more about your shots, so it could be useful to improve. your composition, timing, and framing.
If you’re sick of overprocessed mobile phone photos and want try Zerocam out for yourself, grab it from the Google Play Store here.
